In an explosive and historic confession, Israel has admitted committing the assassination of Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran this year.
This is the first time when Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz said that it was their action that killed Haniyeh, one of Hamas’s political leading members. The event took place in July in Tehran, Iran’s capital, where Haniyeh lodged in a building attacked and led to the deaths. Until now the strike has been accredited to Israel but it was never actually declared on any official media channel.
Haniyeh was considered for many years as the political image of Hamas, and his death of course is a major loss for the organization. In his speech, Katz didn’t stop at the confirmation but issued a bold warning:
"We will not stop. Next will be the heads of the Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen,” added Mr Moon.
This announcement comes as tensions rise in the Middle East, with the Houthi militant group in Yemen firing missiles and drones at the Jewish state. These words of Katz point at the fact that Israel has been stepping up its operations against what it considers to be enemies sponsored by Iran deepening conflicts across the region.
The assassination of Haniyeh confirms that Israel is willing and ready to go for the jugular against its enemies, including Iranians. The revelation also casts doubts on the repercussions of the regional security, this is on the basis that the action in question is undoubtedly to incite further reprisal from Iran and its partners.
